Genesis 3:8&9
8 "And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, WHERE ART THOU?"
Adam and Eve, who once enjoyed close, personal, sweet face-to-face fellowship with God, now hid from Him because they were afraid.
Why did the LORD ask them where they were? Doesn't He know all things? Well yes, of course He does. He knew where they were. So the question remains, why did He ask this question?
This is the very first question recorded in the Bible. God asked it of Adam and Eve. Do you really believe He was unaware of there whereabouts? No. Of course He knew. But He didn't ask because He didn't know where they were: They didn't know where they were.
It was now His sorrowful task to telling them the consequences of their sin. His question, however, would have no answer until 4,000 years later.
How His heart must have been breaking when He told them of their fallen condition, their broken relationship with Him and how they would no more be able to walk with Him in the cool of the garden. No more sweet communion with Him. No longer could they see His face.
The Answer.
What is the answer to God's question? It is found in the answer to the first question recorded in the New Testament!
In the gospel of Matthew, the Holy Spirit has eloquently recorded that answer for us.
Matthew 2:1-2
1 "Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
2 Saying, WHERE IS HE THAT IS BORN KING OF THE JEWS? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him."
The answer is "COME. COME AND FIND HIM Who is born King of the Jews. Come and worship Him."
He is the One worthy of all our worship and praise! The ONLY One! He came to pay a debt He did not owe for us who owed a debt we could not pay. And He is still holding out His nail-pierced hand which is freely offered to "whosoever will," though it was anything but free to Him. It cost Jesus and His Father EVERYTHING!
What better gift could you get at Christmas or, for that matter, any time of the year?! Eternal life: The gift that keeps on giving!
So.....Where are you?
