Commodore Maury of The United States Navy

Psalm 8:3-8
When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit him?
For You have made him a little lower than the angels,
And You have crowned him with glory and honor.

You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands;
You have put all things under his feet,
All sheep and oxen—
Even the beasts of the field,
The birds of the air,
And the fish of the sea
That pass through the paths of the seas.

The BIBLE is a treasure storehouse for many things.  It reveals first and foremost things about our wonderful Jesus.  The Holy Spirit uses stories, types, words and even numbers to explain spiritual truths to us.  It is the most accurate of history books.

Among the many, many things this amazing book unveils are also scientific principles and details about our universe, some of which, to date, remain a mystery.

Meet Matthew Fontaine Maury (January 14, 1806 –February 1, 1873), of the United States Navy, an American astronomer, historian, oceanographer, meteorologist, cartographer, author, geologist, and educator.

(Lieut. Matthew Fontaine Maury U.S. Navy)

He was nicknamed "Pathfinder of the Seas" and "Father of Modern Oceanography and Naval Meteorology." He published the first extensive and comprehensive book on oceanography.

Maury made many important new contributions to charting winds and ocean currents, including ocean lanes for passing ships at sea. In 1825 at age 19, Maury joined the United States Navy as a midshipman on board the frigate USS Brandywine. Almost immediately he began to study the seas.

Later in life, when Commodore Maury was very sick, he asked one of his daughters to get the Bible and read to him.  She chose Psalm 8, the eighth verse of which speaks of  "whatsoever walketh through the paths of the sea," he repeated "the paths of the sea, the paths of the sea.  If God says 'the paths of the sea,' they are there, and if I ever get out of this bed I will find them."

(Commander Maury's map of ocean currents 1836)

Well, he did!.....thousands of years after their existence was recorded in scripture!
