Samson And The Gates Of Hebron

Judges 16:1-3
“Now Samson went to Gaza and saw a harlot there, and went in to her. When the Gazites were told, “Samson has come here!” they surrounded the place and lay in wait for him all night at the gate of the city. They were quiet all night, saying, “In the morning, when it is daylight, we will kill him.”
And Samson lay low till midnight; then he arose at midnight, took hold of the doors of the gate of the city and the two gateposts, pulled them up, bar and all, put them on his shoulders, and carried them to the top of the hill that faces Hebron.”

What a very odd thing to do.  Don't some Bible stories just leave you scratching your head wondering what gives?  Me, too.

Samson lays low until midnight becsuse hemail knew those wicked Philistines were gunning for him.  Then he gets up, grabs ahold of the city gates AND THEIR POSTS, rips them out of their moorings and runs with them on his back up the top of a nearby hill?
What gives?  Why did He do it?

The gates of any city in Biblical times served as the parliament of that city where business was transacted and judgments are passed; the city counsel, if you will. It's the place of strength of every city so, when someone captured the gates, they captured the whole city!

The name, "Hebron," means "fellowship" in Hebrew.  Samson's name in Hebrew is Shimshon which is derived from the root word, "Shemesh," the center lamp of the menorah.

We (Gentiles) who were afar off could not have Hebron, "fellowship" with God.  We were tried at the gates of the city by the law and found guilty.  He Who sits in judgment at the gates of heaven had to judge us unworthy so we were cut off from God.

Then Jesus came and changed everything!

Jesus said of His Church that "the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."  This passage perfectly portrays what our Lord Jesus did.  Just as Samson carried those wooden gates all the way up that hill, so Jesus  carried  the gates of hell--all our sins, punishment, shame, poverty, and EVERY CURSE--on His back, all the way up the hill of Mt. Calvary to restore "Hebron-fellowship," between us and our Father!
HALLELUJAH!!!

Isn't it incredible? Everywhere you look, in every story of the Bible, in every name and type, you find wonderful pictures of Jesus, even in this story of Samson and the gates of Hebron.
