The Elders Of The Book Of Revelation

Revelation 4:4
4"And round about the throne were FOUR AND TWENTY SEATS: and upon the seats I {John} saw four and twenty ELDERS SITTING, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads CROWNS OF GOLD."
-

-
What Is An elder?
Elders in the church are generally those who are valued for their wisdom.  They often hold a position of responsibility in a Christian group and, in some Christian churches, are actually ordained.  They often fill in for the pastor in preaching and pastoral functions from time to time.
These are certainly valid descriptions of elders in the church.  They are people we look up to for counsel and advice.
-
What is an elder according to the opening passage? Is it someone older than you or I, over the age of, say, fifty perhaps?  Is it a specially-ordained person in the church?
No.  According to this verse, elders are those who are "seated." That means they are resting; not struggling or striving.  Notice they are also wearing crowns of GOLD on their HEADS.
-

-
Gold in the Bible is a typology of "Divine Righteousness."  These seated (resting) individuals are conscious of their "Divine Righteousness in Christ, hence the crown on their "heads," where consciousness resides.
-
Weaned From Milk?
Hebrews 5:13
"For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe."
-
An elder is also someone who is "weaned."   "Weaned," you say?"  Yes, weaned, like a baby from its milk bottle.
Anyone who thinks that righteousness is a result of holy living or right doing the Bible calls them "unskilled in the word of righteousnes."  Such a person, Paul says, is "a baby."  He or she is not weaned from the milk of the law.
-
Righteousness is a gift, Church; not an action you perform.  It is not connected to anything one thinks, says or does.
-
It doesn't matter how many degrees you have after your name, how long you've been a Christian, whether you are a teacher, a pastor, or a theologian.  The question is "Are you weaned?"  Whoever is not weaned is a spiritual "babe."
-

-
Solid Food.
Babies cannot eat solid food.  They can only ingest the milk of the word.   The bread and wine that the Melchizedek priesthood brings is unpalatable to them because they not weaned from milk, i.e. the law.
-
That is why so many come against the real gospel, GRACE.  They have been fed a mixture of law and grace, which is actually more Law than grace.  The real gospel looks like "license" to them.  They can neither handle nor understand it.  So they resist it and persecute those who teach it.
-
The same thing happened to the Apostle Paul.  So, if you find yourself facing the same kind of persecution, don"t worry:  You're in good company!
-
The Crystal Sea.
Revelation 4:6-8
"Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal. And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying:
“Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God Almighty,
Who was and is and is to come!”
-

-
Why Crystal, Not Liquid?
Before the throne of God, around which the elders were seated, is a "sea of glass, like  crystal." Why is it crystal and not liquid?
Just like our seas and oceans that are affected by tides because of the moon and the wind, a liquid sea would undulate with waves, tossed about by the wind, too.  This sea is crystal, not liquid, meaning these elders seated beside it are no longer "tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine."
-
A "liquid sea" is described by the Apostle Paul below.  He explains that to have a proper understanding of righteousness means you are no longer "children," in the natural sense, but are "grown up in Christ."  Your thinking, beliefs and understanding are "crystallized."
-
Ephesians 4:14-16
"...we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love."
-

-
He Said, She Said.
Those who think that God still has something left to do in their lives are unsettled; adrift, so to speak, on a liquid sea.  In any case, they are not "resting."  Paul brought up the "every-wind-of-doctrine" issue because he was describing Christians who are pointing fingers at each other in a battle of beliefs, in a "he said, she said" kinda way.
It is this "wind" that ruffles the waters of the "sea" and causes the "storm." The sea of those who engage in such arguing is liquid, undulating, changeable; but it is not crystal.
-
White Raiment.
These elders not only have gold crowns on their heads but they are clothed in white raiment.  Their thinking is encircled with the golden crown of righteousness consciousness and they are clothed from head to toe in His purity as well.
-

-
24 Wings And Full Of Eyes.
Elders are also resting in the secure knowledge of being well protected.
Revelation 4:6-8
6 "....in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back.
7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. 8 The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within."
-
There are twenty-four elders.  There are four living creatures with six wings each.  That is a total of 24 wings, the same as the number of elders. Each creature was also full of eyes."  These four living beings represent the four gospels.  They are the four "faces" of Jesus.
-
Are there really four living being around the throne of God that look like this?  No, of course not.  John says that all of these things he saw were "signs," not what he saw with his physical eyes.  Otherwise, Jesus really would look like a lamb with seven horns and seven eyes.  How silly would that be?
-
All of the verbal pictures he recorded, all of these signs, have wonderful and amazing meanings that tell us more about Jesus!  For more on that topic, follow the link below:
https://emmausroadministries.wordpress.com/2016/03/30/why-do-we-have-four-gospels-tabernacle-series-part-5/.
What does it all mean?
-
Typologies.
Wings speak of "protection," eyes speak of "discernment."  The number, 24, referring to the seated elders, is a representative number.  12, in Bible numerics, is the number of administration or indicative of a generation.  12 elders represent all the Old Testament saints, 12 represent New Testament saints. There are 24 total wings belonging to the 4 living creatures.  These, as you saw, represent Jesus.
-
They tell us that there are enough wings of protection for all the elders and eyes of discernment that sees everything.  They are fully protected and can rely on Jesus to see everything around them clearly.
-
No wonder they are resting!  No wonder they are peacefully seated!  No wonder they are not tossed to and fro!  They know how protected, loved and cared for by Jesus Himself!
-
Understanding the Bible becomes SO MUCH CLEARER when you understand that God's work is FINISHED, particularly in regard to the book of Revelation.
-

-
Another Characteristic Of Elders.
Another quality of elders is described by the Apostle James:
James 5:14
14 "Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord."
-
This is such a beautiful truth.  Notice he doesn't say, "Call for the elders and find one who is NOT sick."  Resting in the FINISHED work causes wellness in every area of your life.  Elders know how to stay healthy by resting in the FINISHED work.
-
Are you sensing a pattern here?
-

-
The Best Teacher.
Grace, through the Holy Spirit, is the best teacher.  The Bible says that He leads us into ALL TRUTH.  You see, those who are true Elders don't feel the need to go around correcting everyone else because they understand that GRACE, through the Holy Spirit, does a FAR better job. They understand that we are transformed by beholding Jesus.  They know that pointing others to Him and unveiling His beauty is what yields positive, long-lasting results, NOT pointing out faults and failings.
But it also isn't by pointing out sinfulness to sinners.  It is by preaching the gospel to them and pointing them to Jesus.  He is the One Who forgives all men liberally, without reservation.
-
Feeding Not Beating.
Most importantly, it is by FEEDING, NOT BEATING THE SHEEP, who are already IN the fold, that the necessary growth will eventually take place.
-
Wow!  Spiritual growth happens effortlessly just by feeding!  Imagine that!   The people will grow, becone mature and the dry leaves will drop.
That's the ONLY way real maturity happens:  By feeding and feeding and feeding the flock.
-

-
The Pulpit Is NOT For Correction.
To be sure, there is an appropriate time and place for correction. Matters that require correcting need to be taken up in private, on an individual basis, and face to face with someone who loves and cares for your well-being.
By that definition, the pulpit is NOT the place for correction.  PERIOD.  It is meant to be used for FEEDING the flock.
-
Preaching a message to an entire flock about some specific sin, behavior or lifestyle just to get at a few, but whacking the entire flock, is not only cruel and inappropriate, it is a total misuse of pastoral privilege. IT IS COWARDLY.  Remember, "They," (those outside of Christ) "will know us by our "love;" not our doctrine, discipline or holiness.
-

-
How To Produce LASTING Holiness.
2 Corinthians 3:18
18 "But we all, with unveiled face, {free from the law} beholding as in a mirror {God's word} the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image {of Jesus} from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord."
-
As always, we are transformed by beholding Jesus.  But if all the flock hears from the pulpit are rules, regulations, what we should do or what we shouldn't, they are hearing the Law.  THIS IS BEATING THE SHEEP.
In such an environment, the sheep have nothing on which to feed, the Holy Spirit has no raw material with which to transform God's people and true, lasting holiness is not produced.
The sheep are starving for the Bread of Life: Jesus.
-
Jesus said to the Apostle Peter THREE times, "FEED MY SHEEP."  True Elders know how to feed as well as what to eat. They will vomit out milk.
-

- When The Veil Is Removed.
When the veil, i.e. the law, is lifted off our lives, we step into the Holy of Holies.  This principle is uniquely demonstrated in the story of Lazarus.
(For more on that topic, follow the link below:
https://emmausroadministries.wordpress.com/2017/01/23/lazarus/)
-
It is when we see Jesus and behold Him as He truly is: PURE LOVE, that we are transformed into His, image from glory to glory.  In beholding His glory and His beauty, all we will want to do is drop our pointing fingers and be quiet before Him.
-
Finally we will come to understand our righteousness in Him. Then, and only then, will the winds of controversy (which is Church-wide) cease as all believers unite in the sole Object of our affection: JESUS.
He will be lifted up and glorified.  He will be adored and finally take His rightful place: IN THE MIDST OF THE GOLDEN CANDLESTICKS.
-
.....and best of all?.....UNBELIEVERS WILL BE IRRESISTABLY ATTRACTED TO JESUS IN DROVES!!!
-

- The Result Of Grace.
When such an environment exists, the gospel will sweep over the entire world like so much holy fire! Nothing will be able to stop it.
So, no matter what your chronological age, no matter what your gender, if you are seated, resting in the FINNISHED work, you are one of THE "TWENTY-FOUR' ELDERS.

What Every Baby Knows

John 15:1-5
"I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away (lifts up); and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
"I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing."
-

-
How do you learn to hear God's voice or know when He is speaking to you?  It's a question we've all struggled with.  Does the Bible give us any clues?  Yes!
-
Children Of God.
John 1:12 says, "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."
-
First of all, Jesus calls us, "Children of God," and then Paul calls us, "sons of God and heirs."
-
How are we sons of God?  In Galatians 3:26-27 says:  "For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ."
In Galatians 4:6-7 he goes on to say, "And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
-
We become sons and daughters of God by faith in Christ.
-

What Does Every Baby Know?
Consider what even the tiniest, weakest little infant knows instinctively about his mother.   She can be among a room full of other people, voices all clamoring together in a jumble of noise.  Yet even the newest of new-born babies knows his mother's voice.  He can pick her out of any crowd.
-
What Every Mother Knows.
His mother is no less instinctive.  Even though the wildest of storms is raging outside, loud thunder crashing, a young mother can sleep peacefully right through it. But if that little baby makes even the tiniest squeek or the weakest cry, she is instantly awake, on her feet and rushing to her child's side.
-

-
Jesus Calmed The Storm.
That is just like our wonderful Jesus! He was fast asleep in the stern of that boat during the wild storm on the sea of Galilee which threatened to capsize the disciple's boat. But at the cry of His loved ones, He was instantly awake.  He calmly stood to His feet, rebuked the wind and waves, and the storm ceased.
-
The storm didn't concern Him.  The storm didn't wake Him.  He would have slept right through it except for the terrified cries of His disciples.  That's what moved Him!
-
In the text Greek it says that afterward there was a "mega calm!!"
-

-
You Know His Voice.
Church, you don't have to jump through hoops to hear your Daddy's voice.  You don't have to take a class in knowing how to hear Him.  You know His voice.  He says so.
-
"My sheep hear my voice and I know them AND THEY FOLLOW ME," it says in John 10:27.
-
He also said, "I AM the vine, you ARE the branches."  He didn't say, "Try to be the branches." Your simply "ARE" by abiding and resting in Him.  How do you do that?  Know how much you are LOVED."  After that, listening and hearing is effortless!  You KNOW His voice, and it is the sweetest sound in the world!
-
What a wonderful Savior we have! That is how He takes care of us.  That's how much He loves us.
-
Simply rest in Him.  KNOW you are His beloved, and you will KNOW instinctively what every baby knows.

Lazarus

John 11:1-4
"Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.”
When Jesus heard that, He said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”
-

-
The story of Lazarus is one of the most famous of all Jesus' miracles, and it is recorded in only one place:  Right here in the Gospel of John.
-
The NON-Synoptic Gospel.
His gospel is quite unlike the other three.  Matthew, Mark and Luke are known as the "Synoptic Gospels."  "Syn" means "together;" optic means "to see."  They are "seen together."
Not only that but, though are things that are unique to each of the four gospels, 95% of John is not recorded anywhere else.  By comparison, 95% of the things recorded in Mark, for instance, are found in the other three.  Why?
-
This is another whole subject in and of itself which we're not going to discuss at length here.  Anyone wanting to know more, please follow the link below:
https://emmausroadministries.wordpress.com/2016/05/07/the-gospels-part-3-of-16-rightly-dividing-the-word-of-god/.
-
Suffice it to say that John, more than all the others, is the gospel of grace.  In fact, the name, "John," means "the grace of God! "
-

-
Jesus Tarried
Isn't kind of strange that Jesus didn't run right over to Bethany when He first heard Lazarus was sick?  In fact, He stayed where He was for two more days and then went to his (Lazarus') house.  It's like He was waiting for him to die.
-
So where was He?  Back up a few verses to the end of the previous chapter and you'll see.  He had traveled to the **other side of the Jordan River at the place where John was first baptizing.  That's the exact same location where Jesus Himself was baptized and the Holy Spirit given to Him without measure.
-
By the time Jesus arrived in Bethany, Lazarus, His very dear friend, was not only dead...he had been dead and buried for four days!
Why did He tarry?
(**Remember this for later.)
-
Hidden in this story is another one that has NOTHING to do with Lazarus at all.  It's both a timeline and prophetic of the end times.
-
Miracles Are Signs.
In the 2nd chapter of John, he says in verse 11 that "This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory;"
-
He was referring here to the miracle of turning water into wine.  But notice, he didn't call it "a miracle."  He called it "A sign."  That means ALL of the miracles recorded in John are signs, meaning they "signify" a deeper meaning, a spiritual truth and/or something prophetic.  They weren't recorded simply because Jesus did these wonderful miracles. These were hand picked by Holy Spirit, Who has something important for us to study and find.
So, we're going to find out what that is.
-

-
3 Resurrection Miracles.
How very interesting that there were three miracles recorded for us where Jesus raised people from the dead.  Three happens to be the number of resurrection in Biblical numerics.
-
(For more on the meaning of numbers in the Bible, follow this link:
https://emmausroadministries.wordpress.com/2016/03/20/bible-numerics/)
-
It is also no coincidence that the three: Lazarus, Jairus' 12-year-old daughter, and the widow of Nain's son, are ONLY in John.
-
Many naysayers and leaders of the Jews, who were skeptical of Jesus, could possible explain away the widow's son and Jairus daughter because they had been dead for a short time.  But Lazarus had dead and buried for four days!  It could be nothing short of a miracle, which really made them angry.
-
Jesus wasn't worried at all about Lazarus, you notice.  We know that because of what He said in John 11:4.  He said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”
-
So why did He weep if He knew He was going to raise him from the dead?
Because death is an enemy.  God never meant for man to get sick or suffer or die.  It was sin that brought all that into the human race.  Death is an enemy.
-

-
Multi-Layered Storehouse.
There are wonderful hidden nuggets in this story in additionto the surface story of Jesus' love for Lazarus and his family.  Some are found in the meanings of Hebrew names and some are in the numbers recorded here.
-
Lazarus' name means, "Helped."  Apt description!  He was most certainly "helped!"  But the three of them are a picture and story of something else entirely.
-
The Bible is a multi-layered storehouse full of hidden treasure.  There are many applications and lessons to learn.  The Bible is unique in that it can speak to the reader in different ways at different times.  No other book on the planet can do that!
-
Four Layers Of Bible Study.
According to the Jewish Rabbis, there are four levels of Bible study.  #1:  The first level is called “P’shat” (pronounced peh-shaht’).  It means “simple.”  #2:  The next level of study is called,“Remez”  (pronounced reh-mez’) meaning “hint," where there is another or "implied" meaning.  #3: D’rash ( pronounced “deh-rash) is also called “Midrash.” This layer uses scripture to interpret itself.
-
#4:  The 4th layer of Bible study is called the “Sod”  (pronounced "sewd or sood".)  It Means “hidden."  In this layer of Bible study are found the hidden, secret or mystic meanings of the text.
(For a more in-dept study of this topic and an excellent example of the "Sod" layer, follow this link:
-
It is this layer I'd like to explore.
-
The Sod Layer.
In the "Sod" layer is found another of God's wonderful timelines, a depiction of Israel, and a description of the end-time Church.  Thsee are all coming to pass now.
-

-
Shepherds Who Will Feed My Flock.
You may (or may not) know that there is a revival of epic proportions sweeping across the globe like, so much holy fire.  There are reports of miracles, people being set free from addictions and bondages, physical healings of all kinds, marriages and relationships being restored and people falling head over heels in love with Jesus.
-
Just as He promised, in these last days, God has also sent shepherds who will feed the flock, not beat them with the law.   (See Jeremiah 23:5-6)
-
In America, we have just seen this happen in the 2016 elelction. Amazingly, our new President's speech sounds an awful lot like the firsts few verses in Ezekiel 34!
-

-
A Little History.
In that garden of long ago when man fell, the human race came under God's judgment. Unless His covenant people offered the right sacrifices, they were doomed.  Before Jesus shed His blood, those sacrifices reminded God of His Son and the work He would do at the cross.
But in the fullness of time, He sent Jesus into the world to redeem us.  He offered one sacrifice for all time and SAT DOWN.
-
A Good Beginning Until.....
The Church was born on the day of Pentecost and off to a great start. But, as you know, it didn't take too long for the law to creep back in by stealth, putting believers back under bondage.
Just like Israel and the Old Testament saints, the curse began operating in believers' lives who were trying to work to be acceptable to God. This is the subject of the entire book of Galatians.
-
For centuries, the Church has been hobbled by the mixing of Law and grace, unintentionally you understand.  Pastors were simply trying to lead their people in the only way they knew how.  Unfortunately, law was a big part of that and became something which kept her from being an even greater force for good.
-

-
The End Times.
But in these last days, just prior to Jesus' return, which He is delaying, the gospel has made a world-wide resurgence!  It is sweeping across the globe like so much holy fire!
Jesus has "tarried" on the "other side of the Jordan" (in Heaven) for "two days."  As you know, a day to God is "AS" a thousand years and a thousand years as one day.  By that reckoning, Jesus has been gone "two days."
-
With the dawn of the 21st century, we have just crossed over into the 3rd day, as God counts time.  In fact, it is VERY EARLY in the morning on the 3rd day.  Jesus will call for us very soon and we'll be with Him for ever.....RAPTURED!
-

-
Bondage To The Law.
The Church is right now in the process of being brought out of bondage to the law, depicted by the tomb of Lazarus.  Mary, Martha and the friends there with them depict the Church who are not under law.  They were commanded by Jesus to remove the "stone" (the law)  from the entrance to the tomb and remove the grave clothes that had him bound.  They depict those from who's faces the "veil" (legalistic thinking) has already been removed.
-
Lazarus represents the people IN the Church who are still bound by the law.  They are born again, yet they are still bound by their "grave clothes."  The people who are free from the "Law" are the ones removing the stone from their lives and the grave clothes with which they are bound.  By removing the "veil from their faces," their eyes can now see the truth of the real gospel.  They are been set free.....and you and I are the unbound helping the bound ones.  We are the new preachers of the gospel of Grace, priests and kings after the order of Melchizedek!
-
Natural Israel.
This story is also a picture of Natural Israel.
For 2,000 years, Jesus has been working among the Gentiles.  That's why He was on the "Other side of the Jordan."  That's what He was doing for those "two days: 2,000 years."
-
But He has turned back, crossed over the Jordan and is working among His people again.  More Jewish people are finding their Messiah than ever before in history.   return to His people.  Many today already know Him as Messiah, but many do not.
-

-
One day soon, those of us who know Jesus, along with our Jewish Christian brethren, will be raptured out of this world to be forever with our Jesus.  When we return with Him in His second coming, all Israel will be saved in one day.  They will have their grave clothes and veil removed.
-
HALLELUJAH!  Thank God that in these last days, the Church is coming into her own.  Many of her people are hearing the voice of Jesus Who says "Lazarus!  Come forth!!!"

The Five Offerings Of Leviticus, Part 10: New Covenant Application

Five Offerings; One Perfect Sacrifice:  Jesus, The Lamb Of God!

John 17:1-4
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent."
-

-
We have the end of the five offerings of Leviticus.
What does this verse have to do with the subject at hand?  Simply this:
Jesus, in this, His high priestly prayer, prayed to His Father for you and me.  His earnest desire was "that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent." John 17:1-2.
-
The Apostle Peter, in 2 Peter 1:2 wrote, "Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord."  Studying all these things causes us to "grow in the knowledge of God and Jesus Christ, Whom He has sent, causing as a by product, "Grace and peace to be multiplied in our lives."
-
How These Offerings Apply To Us.
Under the New Covenant, we no longer offer the sin and trespass offerings.  By accepting Christ as our Savior, He has taken care of our sin nature and our sinning once and for all.  We walk through life with His covering and thus have the same acceptance (radzon) before God that Jesus has.
-
The first three offerings that are a sweet savor to God, however, we still offer today.  How?
Consider the following verses:
-
Hosea 14:1-2
"O Israel, return unto the Lord thy God;
for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity.
Take with you words, and turn to the Lord:
say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously:
so will we render the calves of our lips.
-
What does that mean:  "The CALVES of our lips?"  That we have lips as fat as a cow?  No.  The verse in Hebrews below explains it:
-
Hebrew 13:15-16
"By him (Jesus) therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased."
-
Instead of offering bulls and goats, our praise to God with the "calves of our lips" are the "sacrifice we offer to God!
-
Consider also these verses:
Ephesians 5:2
"And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma."
-
Phillipians 4:18-19
"Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God. And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus."
-
"A Sweet smelling aroma."  Sound familiar?  That's what God smelled when Noah offered his Burnt Offering.  And what was the result?  God vowed He would NEVER destroy the whole world with a flood ever again.
-
When the Burnt Offering goes up by the "calves of our lips," the blessings come down to God's people!  There are showers of blessings!  The reference in Phillipians called financial blessing of our brothers and sisters and our contributions to Christian work as well as the tithe a "sweet smelling aroma, a sacrifice well-pleasing to God."
-
The Successful Christian Life.
The secret to successfully walking through life as a believer is found in these two verses.  Both Jesus and the Apostle Peter clearly show us what that secret is:  "To know You (meaning the Father) and Jesus Christ, Whom He has sent."  By increasing in this knowledge, both grace and peace (shalom) WILL BE MULTIPLIED TO US.  I WANT THAT!
-
Grace is "unmerited favor."  Peace: "Shalom in Hebrew; In Greek: "Soteria," is a very rich word.  It is wholeness in every area:  Peace of mind, which includes freedom from fear, prosperity in your life, in your relationships and in your finances, wholeness in your mind and in your emotions.  These things are "MULTIPLIED" to you as your knowledge of Jesus increases.

Why We Study These Offerings.
Can knowledge of these things help you in your daily Christian walk, when the heat is on?  Can they help when you are sick, when challenges in life rise up, or when us or your family is under attack by the enemy?  Yes, because you are INCREASING IN YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF JESUS!

The Emmaus Principle.
The very first record of Jesus appearing to His disciples after His resurrection was on the Emmaus Road.  He went through all the Law and the Prophets and explained to them the scriptures "CONCERNING HIMSELF."  And what was the effect?  They were so encouraged and so energized they practically ran all the way back to Jerusalem!   Folks, that a seven-mile trek.....and it was nearly dark.  Amazing!
That's how excited they were.  That's how energized they were.  And the first thing they wanted to do was share Jesus with their fellow believers!
-
Power Of The Spoken Word.
Another perk of studying the Old Testament and seeing Jesus in all the scriptures about Him helps us in fighting the good fight of faith.
-
When Jesus was tested of the devil in the wilderness, what did He do?  He could have said or done anything He wanted, right?  After all, He is the Son of God.  But how did He defeat the devil EVERY TIME?  HE SPOKE OUT THE WRITTEN WORD OF GOD.  "It is written..." "It is written..." It is written..."

-
That's how you "resist the devil" so he will flee from you:  Speak out the word of God!
-

-
Faith Comes By Hearing.
And how does the word get in your head so it comes out of your mouth?  Faith comes by "hearing, and hearing by the WORD OF GOD."
When life happens, the Holy Spirit brings to mind what you have "heard."  How can He bring to mind that which you have not heard?  We need to hear, and hear, and hear, and keep on hearing.

2 Timothy 1:7 "The Lord has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and of love and of sound mind."  When life comes at you, Jesus' voice whispers to you, "Fear not; I am with you."  When the devil says to you, "Look at so-and-so.  Your family always gets this or that disease.  You're going to get it, too."  Jesus says, "Be not afraid.  I am your health."
-
The Holy Spirit comes to your rescue by reminding you of what you have heard.  How can He bring to mind that which you have not heard?  The obvious answer is, "He can't."
-

-
Transformed By Beholding.
As you hear by studying God's word, you are changed.  You become calm in stressful situations because you are, resting; seated in Christ.  You understand how to guard your heart so it doesn't fail you because of fear.
Your calm demeanor is a witness to your family, your friends, your colleagues.  Jesus said you will "Be witnesses," not that you will "DO" witnessing."  By "hearing" you are transformed because you are beholding Jesus.  You see Him in all the stories, types and shadows that you are studying now.  They are like looking at Jesus through an expanded view!
-
Now, when you read through the book of laws, you'll better be able to see Jesus in these amazing five offerings of Leviticus.

The Five Offerings Of Leviticus, Part 9: The Trespass Offering: Asham [אָשָׁם]

Leviticus 5:1-4
"“If a person sins in hearing the utterance of an oath, and is a witness, whether he has seen or known of the matter—if he does not tell it, he bears guilt.
“Or if a person touches any unclean thing, whether it is the carcass of an unclean beast, or the carcass of unclean livestock, or the carcass of unclean creeping things, and he is unaware of it, he also shall be unclean and guilty. Or if he touches human uncleanness—whatever uncleanness with which a man may be defiled, and he is unaware of it—when he realizes it, then he shall be guilty.
“Or if a person swears, speaking thoughtlessly with his lips to do evil or to do good, whatever it is that a man may pronounce by an oath, and he is unaware of it—when he realizes it, then he shall be guilty in any of these matters."
-

-
Whereas the Sin Offering is about who you "ARE," the Trespass Offering is about what you "DO."
-
What Qualifies As Sin.
If you even so much as heard the utterance of an oath or knew of it and did not report it, you were guilty of that sin when you became aware of it.
If you happened to touch an unclean animal or the carcass of a clean dead animal, you were guilty of sin when you became aware of it.
If you touched any human uncleanness, whether excrement or other bodily discharge, you were guilty of sin when you became aware of it.
If a person spoke or swore or spoke an oath thoughtlessly, whether for a good or a bad purpose, when you became aware of it, you were guilty of sin.
-
I think the last one would probably catch most of us, speaking for myself.  Every single one of these offenses were cause to bring your trespass offering to the priest.  They must have been pretty busy!
Whether you brought a bullock, a goat, a sheep, two birds or a handful of flour, your sins were identified with the sacrifice.  In the case of the animals and birds, you laid your hands on the animal and killed it with your own hands.  The priest took it from there.
-
Degrees Of Sin.
Are there degrees of sin?  Are some greater than others?  Yes, as we learned in Part 8.
-
The different sizes of offerings speak to the different degrees of sin and different people's views of God.  Some sins are more serious than others as evidenced, for instance, in the story of Joseph.
You recall he was a slave in Egypt in the house of Potiphar.  He was second in command under Pharoah.  His wife took a liking to Joseph and sought to seduce him.
This wealthy man would have had his pick of the most beautiful and young women of Egypt.  She would have been a "looker," as they say.
One day, when he was alone in the house with her, she went after him again.  Let's follow the story in Genesis 39:7-9

" And it came to pass after these things that his master’s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, “Lie with me.”
But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand. There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”
-
Joseph lived more than 400 years BEFORE THE LAW, yet he called adultery, "GREAT WICKEDNESS."  How did he know that without the law?  How did he know to call it "GREAT WICKEDNESS?"
So you see, there really are degrees of sin.

-
Divine Exchange.
If you have been following this series, you know that when you laid your hands on the Burnt Offering, the representative righteousness of the innocent victim passed to you.  The opposite, however, happened when you placed your hands of the innocent victim in the sin and trespass offering.  Your sins were transferred to the innocent animal.  They are both a divine exchange that happens simultaneously when you accept Jesus as your Savior.
-
Imagine how you would feel if you had to bring a live animal to a priest, lay your hands on it's head, confess your sin or sins and kill it with your own bare hands.  As you watched the animal suffer and die, you have a much different understanding of what your sin has cost.  Jesus did that for every human being on the whole planet, from one end of history to the other.  He was punished as if He were the worst human being of all time!
-
When you brought your offering to the priest, he did not examine you.  What would be the point?  He knew why you were there.  He examined your lamb.  You see, it's not about you.  It never was.  It's about your lamb.
-

-
It's Not About You.
All these offerings depict Jesus sacrifice on the cross.  He paid for all of our sins and our sin nature IN FULL.....and then some!
-
Most Christians understand this part.  The problem arises in their inability to understand what they have have become because of The Burnt Offering:  They have been made The Righteousness of God in Christ!
-
These offerings so beautifully showcase that we are not righteous because of what we do, but because of what Christ has done.  We come to God, not in our own righteousness; we come into God's presence bringing Jesus, our Perfect Lamb!
-
Sin vs Sins.
The trespass offering paid for "sins (plural) committed," i.e. your deeds; the sin offering paid for "sin (singular)," meaning the sin nature we inherited from Adam.  You see, we aren't sinners because we commit sins; we are sinners because of Adam's sin.  Jesus' one offering on the cross takes care of both.  He paid for your sin AND your sins!
-
Leviticus 5:114-16
"Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “If a person commits a trespass, and sins unintentionally in regard to the holy things of the Lord, then he shall bring to the Lord as his trespass offering a ram without blemish from the flocks, with your valuation in shekels of silver according to the shekel of the sanctuary, as a trespass offering. And he shall make restitution for the harm that he has done in regard to the holy thing, and shall add one-fifth to it and give it to the priest. So the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering, and it shall be forgiven him."
-
If your trespass was against the LORD, such as touching the Holy things inadvertently, you were to bring a ram to the priest, which is a male animal obviously.  If you remember, male animals typify that which is of benefit TO God, or "God-ward."  Female depicted "man-ward."
In this case, restitution was required.  Moses would make a valuation of the offense, you have to pay 100% and add 1/5 more, which is a double tithe.  That equals 120%.
-

-
God Gained MUCH MORE Through The Cross.
Church, that's exactly what Jesus did for the Father and for us.  You see, God made the whole world and everything in it.  He then turned around and gave it over into man's hands.  In other words, He invested in us.
But what did Adam do?  He handed the keys, as it were, over to the devil, and God lost all of His investment.
-
Huge Debt Of Sin.
Because of Adam's fall, we owed God a HUGE debt of sin, a debt we could not pay.  But Jesus came and made Himself liable for that sin-debt in our place.  He, by His blood and sacrifice, not only paid back 100%, He made restitution to His Father on our behalf.  He added 1/5 more:  120%.
God gained back much more through redemption than He ever lost via creation.  what the second Adam did was GREATER by far than what the first Adam did.
-
This same benefit is accorded to you and I.  When the devil attacks and steals from us, he has to make RESTITUTION.  We get back all that we lost plus the spoils:  120% restoration!
-
Acceptable Animals.
Leviticus 5:5-6
“And it shall be, when he is guilty in any of these matters, that he shall confess that he has sinned in that thing; and he shall bring his trespass offering to the Lord for his sin which he has committed, a female from the flock, a lamb or a kid of the goats as a sin offering. So the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin."
-
So, a person was to bring a lamb or a kid of the goats.  He must confess his sin or sins before the priest and then make his offering.
We read further on that if he could not afford either of those animals, he could bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons.  If he couldn't afford birds, he could bring 1/10th of an ephah of flour.
-
Animal sacrifices for this offering were female, either a lamb, a goat, two turtle doves or pigeons. But if the man was very poor, even a handful of flour would be accepted.
The point is that God wants everyone to be forgiven for their trespasses and made allowance for men of all economic means.
-
"FEMALE" denotes that it is "man-ward," or of benefit TO MAN.
-
How Big Is Your God?
As you learned in the portion about burnt offering of this series, the size of the offering was based on economic status.  In our dispensation, it depicts a person's perception of Jesus.  A bullock is a BIG revelation, a sheep or goat a medium-sized revelation, birds smaller still and a handful of flour smallest of all.  Yet no matter how you see Him, what understand or appreciate about God, you are no less forgiven and acceptable to God.  Same Jesus; same blood that cleanses you.
It does, however, affect your walk through life. If you have a big revelation of Jesus, you can receive big blessings.  If not, you cannot receive big from, God.
-
How Big Is Your Faith.
It speaks to the size of your faith.  As there are different degrees of sin, so there are different degrees of faith, though it only takes faith as small as a grainy of mustard to receive your miracle.
Jesus said to His disciples in Luke 8, "Where is your faith?"  So we have NO faith.
On the Sea of Galilee, when there was a great storm, Jesus came walking to them on the sea.  Peter was allowed to get out of the boat and walk to Him, but soon began to sink when he looked at the storm around.  Jesus said to him, Why did you doubt, oh you of LITTLE faith?"
And finally, there was the centurion who's servant was sick.  Jesus offered to come and heal him, but the man refused, telling Jesus that he only needed to speak the word and the servant wold be healed in Matthew 8:10  "Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!"
-
You see?   There is "no faith, little faith, and great faith!"
-
The entire animal was burned, including it's entrails containing the animal's excrement or dung outside the camp.  That's why Jesus was crucified OUTSIDE THE CAMP.
-

-
New Covenant Of Grace.
5, in case you didn't know, is the number of "Grace."  Grace is a person:  Our Lord Jesus.  It took 5 different offerings to describe that one, beautiful, multi-faceted sacrifice of our Lord Jesus!  Back then, sins could only be covered.  Ours, however, ARE CLEANSED FOR OUR ENTIRE LIVES under the New Covenant.
-
In Psalm 51:10-11, David earnestly prayed, "Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.  Do not cast me away from Your presence,
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me."
-
What he longed for, WE HAVE!  His dream is our reality.  The Holy Spirit doesn't come and go as in the Old Testament.  Because their sins were only covered, He could only reside ON individuals.  Today He lives IN US because our spirits are CLEANSED by the blood of Jesus.  HALLELUJAH!!!!!

-
I hope that understanding these sacrifices and offerings give you a better idea of just how serious sin is to God and what we have been redeemed from.  Jesus paid a price we will never fully know, even in eternity.
Aren't you glad that we have not only been delivered from all our sins but from the bondage that comes from the continual consciousness of sins?  That's what those offerings did;  constantly reminded them of their sins every time they brought an offering to the priest.

-
The War Is Over.
In Jesus, we have the Sin and Trespass offering:  Our sin nature is cleansed and our sinful deeds covered.  Because all our sins are cleansed, we have Jesus, our Peace offering, Who made Peace with God possible.  The war is OVER!
We have Jesus, our Minchah/Grain offering.  Because of His perfect life, He qualified to die that death for us and become for us the Bread of Life.
-
Now that we understand that our sin nature and sinful deeds are taken care of; Now that we have peace with God; Now that we are feeding on The Bread Of Life, we can come to a place of spiritual maturity where we clearly see that WE ARE THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD IN CHRIST because of Jesus our BURNT OFFERING!!!
-
All I can say is, "Wow!"  Jesus, we are forever grateful!  THANK YOU!  You OVERpaid ALL the debt that was against us.  Your one, selfless, beautiful sacrifice has fulfilled all of these:  The five offerings of Leviticus.
