The Five Offerings Of Levitucs Part 8: The Sin Offering

Sin Offering: Korban Khatta'at [קרבן חטאת]
Leviticus 4:1-7
"Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘If a person sins unintentionally against any of the commandments of the Lord in anything which ought not to be done, and does any of them, if the anointed priest sins, bringing guilt on the people, then let him offer to the Lord for his sin which he has sinned a young bull without blemish as a sin offering. He shall bring the bull to the door of the tabernacle of meeting before the Lord, lay his hand on the bull's head, and kill the bull before the Lord.
The priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle some of the blood seven times before the Lord, in front of the veil of the sanctuary.  And the priest shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of sweet incense before the Lord, which is in the tabernacle of meeting; and he shall pour the remaining blood of the bull at the base of the altar of the burnt offering, which is at the door of the tabernacle of meeting.

-

Now we come to the sin offerng.  This is a new subject to God because it says, "Now the LORD spoke to Moses, saying...". This indicates a new category.  To back and look at the beginning of chapters 2 & 3 and you don't see that phrase.
In the order of His book, God had put it 4th, further away from Him, as it were, than the Burnt Offering.  He doesn't want to see or be reminded of our sins; He wants to see us in the beauties, glories and excellencies of His Son.
-
Unlike the first three offerings:  The Burnt Offering, Grain Offering and Peace Offering, the Sin and Tresspass offerings are not a sweet-smelling aroma.  They are both shadows of Jesus on the cross when He was carrying our sins.
-
Unintentional Sins.
God said, "If a person sins unintentionally against any of the commandments of the Lord in anything which ought not to be done, and does any of them..."  Since all sin in actually intentional, we must look at the Hebrew word itself for clarity.
-
The word for unintentional in Hebrew is the word "shegagah."  It is also translated as "inadvertently, through ignorance, unawares."

"Aren't all sins intentional," you ask?  Yes, they are.  But many times we know that we have or are committing sins but, actually, there is ignorance there.  We don't fully understand "why" we are doing whatever it is we are doing.  There are deep-seated reasons of which we are "unaware."  In that regard, they are done "inadvertently, through ignorance and unawares."
-
What About Hebrew 10?
But what about Hebrews 10," you ask?  Good question.  Can believers commit a sin from which they cannot be redeemed?  No.  Throughout all Paul's letters to the Church, he never mentioned a sin that was unpardonable.  Not once!  If there was such a thing, he certainly should have said something, shouldn't he?  I suggest to you that there is a very good chance that there is something we don't understand.
-
Rather than discuss that entire subject here, please refer to the link below for more Information:

-

-
JESUS SAT DOWN.
The sin offering (Jesus) covers all those offenses!  In the case of ancient Israel, they had to offer sacrifices repeatedly.  Their priests never sat down because their word was never done.
Our perfect sacrifice, Jesus, when He had offered one sacrifice for sins FOREVER, SAT DOWN.  He finished the work!
-
Hebrew 10:11-13
"And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified."
-
Categories Of Sin.
There are four categories or levels of sin based on a person's position in Israel:
#1) The anointed priest, #2)  The whole congregation, #3) A leader in Israel who is not of the priesthood, and #4) An individual member of the congregation.
-
Valuation Of Offenses.
A person's position determined the valuation of the offense plus the type and gender of animal that must be offered, whether anointed priest, the whole congregation, a leader, or an individual Israelite.  The greater the position or influence, the greater the valuation of the of the sin and the more costly the offering required.  Remember, these are all types and shadows.  It shows to us that In God's eyes, there are degrees of sin.
-
This is corroborated by Jesus Himself Who said to Pilate, "“You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.” John 19:11
-
The most costly offering, of course, was the largest animal: The bullock.  Sheep and goats were less expensive, and doves even less and a handful of flour the least costly of all.  Female animals were the least expensive in their economy.

-
-
Anointed Priests.

The anointed priest offered a bullock without spot.  The LORD said he must "bring the bull to the door of the tabernacle of meeting before the Lord, lay his hand on the bull's head, and kill the bull before the Lord.
The priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle some of the blood seven times before the Lord, in front of the veil of the sanctuary.  And the priest shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of sweet incense before the Lord, which is in the tabernacle of meeting; and he shall pour the remaining blood of the bull at the base of the altar of the burnt offering, which is at the door of the tabernacle of meeting."
-
Meaning Of Numbers.
Seven is the number of perfection or completeness in the Bible.  His sprinkling of the blood seven times gives him perfect standing before God.  He must also put blood on the horns of the altar of incense and pour the remaining blood at the base of the altar.
Horns speak of authority.  There were 4 horns on the corners of the altar just as Jesus' cross had 4 corners.  This signifies that Jesus' sacrifice on the cross is effective for North, South, East and West of the whole world.

-
Beautiful Pictures Of Jesus In The Fat, Kidney And Liver.
God goes on to say in verses 8-10, " He (the priest) shall take from it (the bullock) all the fat of the bull as the sin offering. The fat that covers the entrails and all the fat which is on the entrails, 9 the two kidneys and the fat that is on them by the flanks, and the fatty lobe attached to the liver above the kidneys, he shall remove, 10 as it was taken from the bull of the sacrifice of the peace offering; and the priest shall burn them on the altar of the burnt offering."
-
Sound familiar?  It should if you have been following along this series.  All the fat, which is the best part, depicts all of Jesus' perfections.  They were burnt on the altar as God's portion.  Please refer back to the Burnt offering part (7) for the whole story.
-
Difference The Burnt Offering And The Sin Offering.
Here is where the sin offering differs from the Burnt offering:
"But the bull’s hide and all its flesh, with its head and legs, its entrails and offal—  the whole bull he shall carry outside the camp to a clean place, where the ashes are poured out, and burn it on wood with fire; where the ashes are poured out it shall be burned."
Leviticus 4:11-12
-
Offal.
In the case of the Burnt Offering where the entrails, head and legs were washed, there is no mention of "offal," which is the animal's dung.  Dung depicts our sins.  In the sin offering, the hide, legs, entrails and offal were taken outside the camp and burned until it became ashes.
Jesus died OUTSIDE the walls of Jerusalem.  He carried our sins which were COMPLETELY burned up until they were ALL GONE in the fires of God's judgment!  That is why Paul could state with absolute certainty that "There is therefore NOW NO CONDEMNATION for those who are in Christ Jesus!"  HALLELUJAH!!!
-
Corporate Sin.
If the congregation as a whole sinned against God, the sin offering also must be a bullock.  That is how serious it is to be a leader of God's people to Him.  The valuation of the one priest's offense is equal to that of the whole congregation.  The procedure for offering the bullock is the same as described above for the priest.
-
This, again, clearly shows you that there truly are degrees of sin.  Yes, Jesus' blood covers them all, but God does consider some sins as more egregious than others.  We not only have the personal testimony from Jesus Himself when He said to Pilate, “You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”  John 19:11

-

-
Leaders Of Israel.
If a leader in Israel sinned, God said "he shall bring as his offering a kid of the goats, a male without blemish. And he shall lay his hand on the head of the goat, and kill it at the place where they kill the burnt offering before the Lord. It is a sin offering."
-
This was someone who was not a member of the priesthood, such as a tribal leader or a ranking officer in the army.  The blood, once again, was put on the horns of the altar of burnt offerings and all the other procedures are the same.
-
Common People.
If an average Israelite sinned against the LORD, "he shall bring as his offering a kid of the goats, a female without blemish, for his sin which he has committed. And he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering, and kill the sin offering at the place of the burnt offering."
-
If the person could not afford a goat, there was provision for that:  "If he brings a lamb as his sin offering, he shall bring a female without blemish."  Again, it was to be a female.
-
According to Leviticus 12, if the person was very poor, they could bring either two pigeons or two turtle doves; one for a burnt offering and one for a sin offering.
-
This animal was of lesser value that all the others mentioned above.  The same procedures for the other offerings are exactly the same.
-
But if the person was so poor, the LORD said, "But if he is not able to bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons, then he who sinned shall bring for his offering one-tenth of an ephah of fine flour as a sin offering. He shall put no oil on it, nor shall he put frankincense on it, for it is a sin offering."
-
Wow!  Can't afford two birds, borrow some flour from your neighbor.  No oil (the Holy Spirit) or frankincense (Jesus in His priestly role) are added to it.  This at least depicts Jesus Who is the Bread of Life.
-
As long as you brought to God something that reminded Him of His Son, He would receive it and forgive you of your sins.
-
Isn't God good?  No matter what sin you have committed or what your position in the body of Christ, whether a pastor, a leader or a common person, the same Jesus is effectual for all their sins.  God wants everyone to be forgiven of all their sins!
-

-
Thank you, Jesus, for taking our place on the cross!  We are forever grateful to You, our Sin Offering!

The Five Offerings Of Leviticus Part 7: The Peace Offering

#4.  The Peace Offering (Zevah haShelamiym זֶבַח הַשְּׁלָמִים )

-
Leviticus 3:1-15
"‘When his offering is a sacrifice of a peace offering, if he offers it of the herd, whether male or female, he shall offer it without blemish before the Lord. And he shall lay his hand on the head of his offering, and kill it at the door of the tabernacle of meeting; and Aaron’s sons, the priests, shall sprinkle the blood all around on the altar. Then he shall offer from the sacrifice of the peace offering an offering made by fire to the Lord.
The fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails, the two kidneys and the fat that is on them by the flanks, and the fatty lobe attached to the liver above the kidneys, he shall remove; and Aaron’s sons shall burn it on the altar upon the burnt sacrifice, which is on the wood that is on the fire, as an offering made by fire, a sweet aroma to the Lord."
-

-
Let's recap:
In the order of His book, the Burnt Offering and Grain Offering are listed first because, from God's point of view, they are most important.  God puts Jesus' death first, then His life to allow us to better appreciate the life He lived to qualify for that death.
-
Man, we discovered, approaches God from the opposite direction:  Via the sin and Tresspass offerings.  Both for God and, experientially for man, the Peace offering comes third.
-
In our "experience," when we are forgiven of all our trespasses (what we do), and sins (what we are), now we can relax!  Now we can have peace with God.  This OBVIOUSLY results in joy and celebration; and that's what this offering is all about: CELEBRATION!
-
-
Peace With God.
We can have peace with God because the whole issue of has been settled at the cross; and it isn't only our past sins up till now.
When Jesus died 2,000 ago, ALL our sins, yours and mine, were still future.  But Jesus is 100% God.  He lives outside time.  Therefore, the cross is outside time.
-
Some say that telling people, "All your sins for your entire life are cleansed," indicates you are saying that God has gone soft on sin.  NO!  God saw all your sins.....every single one of them.....and punished Jesus for them ALL.  Not one was left unpaid, or else God could not legally raise Jesus from the dead.
-
In the cross, all extremes meet.  God demonstrated His Holy, inflexible righteousness when He allowed Jesus to die on our behalf.  He demonstrated His great love for us by not killing us!  Thank you, Jesus!
-
Because we still sin occasionally as we walk through life, we can be assured that we are covered by Jesus.  We can pick ourselves up and go on.
-

-
Types Of Acceptable Animals.
This offering could be any animal of the herd or the flock, either male or female.  It must be also be without defect.
God makes a point of saying that the animals chosen for sacrifice had to be from the herd or the flock, meaning, again, that they must be domesticated.  As we learned in Part 2, wild animals cannot represent Jesus, Who was perfectly submissive and obedient to His Father's will.
-
In this offering, however, a bullock, a lamb or a goat is acceptable but birds are not.  The doves or pigeons offered in the burnt offering represent believers who have a small concept of God as someone way up in heaven, far away.  They have little appreciation of the blood as well.
But one of the reasons the Shelamim was offered was in thanksgiving for something God did for you.  How big is your concept and appreciation of God when He heals you or your family member of a sickness or disease, or if you are spared from a terrible accident?  REALLY, REALLY BIG, much larger than a dove or pidgeon could portray!  That's why birds were not acceptable.
-
The Law Of The Peace Offering.
Though the Peace offering is outlined in chapter 3, in chapter 7 we find "The Law of the Peace Offering.
-
-
Leviticus 7:11-14
"This is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings which he shall offer to the Lord: If he offers it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer, with the sacrifice of thanksgiving, unleavened cakes mixed with oil, unleavened wafers anointed with oil, or cakes of blended flour mixed with oil.
Besides the cakes, as his offering he shall offer leavened bread with the sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace offering. And from it he shall offer one cake from each offering as a heave offering to the Lord. It shall belong to the priest who sprinkles the blood of the peace offering.
The flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offering for thanksgiving shall be eaten the same day it is offered. He shall not leave any of it until morning."
-
Notice in this offering, LEAVENED BREAD is allowed!  What a surprise!  Why is that?
First of all, the thanksgiving offering must be offered with UNleavened cakes or wafers mixed with oil OR cakes of blended flour MIXED WITH OIL.
The first two represent Jesus as the perfect man that He is, but the cakes of blended flour depict His birth as being mixed or brought forth by the Holy Spirit.  That's what oil in the Bible represents:  The Holy Spirit, whether inside a person...when you are born again...or anointed with the Holy Spirit, meaning The Power of the Holy Spirit resting ON you in power.  Inside and outside!
-
Jesus was born with the Holy Spirit inside, unlike us who are born in sin, and anointed outside upon His baptism given the Spirt WITHOUT MEASURE.  We receive those things upon accepting Him as our Lord and Savior at conversion.
-
Eaten The Same Day.
Notice the bold phrase in red:
"The flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offering for thanksgiving shall be eaten the same day it is offered.  He shall not leave any of it until morning."
-
What does this mean for us today?
-
We must DAILY thank and praise God for His blessings and protection.  The day you confess divine health, that day you will eat of what you have confessed.  If you have confessed God's blessings and protection today, TODAY you will eat of it's benefits.
-
There is no such thing as thanking Him for tomorrow's blessings.  Whatever you thank Him for today:  Health, prosperity, provision, protection, you will eat of the benefits of your offering for today only.  It does not hold over until tomorrow.
-
But there was another reason to offer the Peace Offering.
-

-
Vows And Voluntary Offerings.
Leviticus 7:16-17
"But if the sacrifice of his offering is a vow or a voluntary offering, it shall be eaten the same day that he offers his sacrifice; but on the next day the remainder of it also may be eaten; the remainder of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day must be burned with fire."
-
If the offering was for a vow or a voluntary offering, THE REMAINDER COULD BE EATEN THE NEXT DAY.  WOW!
-
We really don't make vows today.  We do, however, make voluntary offerings.  For instance, when you promise your wife or husband on your wedding day that, come what may, you will remain faithful to him or her till death do you part.  That "offering" may be "eaten" on the second day (i.e. for the rest of your life) but not on the third day.  The third day when Jesus returns!

-
ShelamayIM - Many Kinds Of Peace.
In Hebrew, the word for peace offering is, "Shelamayim."  It is plural.  Whenever you want to make a word plural in Hebrew, you add "im," at the end.  Technically you could, "Peace(s)" offering (pural) in English.
-
There are many kinds of peace gained by Jesus' death.  You have peace with God, peace in your conscience, peace within yourself, peace within your family and among your friends.  But the word can also be translated, "Prosperities," so, peace and prosperity in your finances as well.  The Psalm says, "The LORD is my Shepherd, I SHALL NOT LACK."
-
Whereas in the case of the Burnt Offering where it must always be a male animal, the Peace offering could be either male or female.
As we learned earlier, "Male" is how the Bible describes something that benefits God; in other words, "Godward."  It also depicts spiritual maturity and strength.  Female depicts "man-ward," or of benefit to us, as well as weakness, spiritually speaking.

Female Portrayed AS Weakness.
Remember, these are typologies. Nothing against females here, simply Biblical means of explaining spiritual concepts.   Women are portrayed "AS" the weaker sex, not that they actually "ARE" weaker, you understand.  Who says that carrying a baby for nine months and delivering that baby is not strength?  We are treated "AS" weaker, but that isn't the same as actually being weak.
-

-
Everyone Has His Food.
In the Peace Offering, God has His food:  The fat is offered to Him; The priests have their food:  Depicting saved individuals; and the Offerer has his food:  Also you!
You and your family get to eat of it.  Everyone gets a portion, unlike the Burnt Offering, which all goes to God.  This was offered and  eaten in celebration of whatever it was that God did for you.
-
Remember the father calling for the fatted calf when the Prodigal Son returned home?  He was offering the Peace Offering to God.  But there are even more amazing secrets in the Hebrew text!
-
-
Secrets In The Hebrew Language.
This is my FAVORITE part!!  You read that fat is mentioned three times as being offered and burnt on the altar but also the "kidneys" and the "fatty lobe attached to the liver," (King James calls it, "The caul.")  These words in Hebrew paint even more beautiful pictures of Jesus!
-
Leviticus 3:3-5
"3 Then he (the priest) shall offer from the sacrifice of the peace offering an offering made by fire to the Lord.
-
The Fat, The Kidneys, And The Liver.
The word in Hebrew for fat is, "cheleb," which means "the best or finest."  If you owned a home say, in the Hamptons, for instance, it could be said that you owned the "fat" of the land.  It is prime property.
-
The word for kidneys is, "·kelayot," from the root word, "kalah: Complete."
Flanks is the word, "kesalim," from the root word, "kasal: Confidence."  There is an "im" at the end of the word because it is plural.  Hebrew uses "im" like we use the letter "s."  Kesalim signifies Jesus' inward "confidences" in His Father.
Finally, what is offered to the LORD on the altar is the "fatty lobe attached to the liver."  The word in Hebrew for this "fatty lobe" is "Yoteret," from the root word, "yatar."
Remember when Boaz sent Ruth home with a whole lot of food?  She went back to her mother-in-law and said, "Look at all this 'yatar: More than enough/Super abundance."
-
But watch what happens when you couple that word with the word for "liver: kabeed."  It comes from the root word, "cavot," which means, "Glory."
-
Put it all together and this is what you are offering to God every time you thank Him:
The fat: Cheleb, or Best, of Jesus' finished work; all of Jesus' inward confidences in His Father, and His "more-than-enough, superabounding Glory!"
-
All of these things remind the Father of the glories, the confidences, and completeness of His Son.  He, of course, knows all of them already but he LOVES to be reminded of all that Jesus is and all that He has done.
-

Thank you, Jesus for being our Peace Offering!

Please proceed to Part 8.  We'll be discussing the Sin and Tresspass offerings as they are pretty much linked together.

The Five Offerings Of Leviticus Part 6: The Grain Offering

#2. The Grain/Meal Offering:  Minchah (מִנְחָה)
Leviticus 2:1-4
‘When anyone offers a grain offering to the Lord , his offering shall be of fine flour. And he shall pour oil on it, and put frankincense on it.  He shall bring it to Aaron’s sons, the priests, one of whom shall take from it his handful of fine flour and oil with all the frankincense. And the priest shall burn it  as a memorial on the altar, an offering made by fire, a sweet aroma to the Lord .

‘And if you bring as an offering a grain offering baked in the oven, it shall be unleavened cakes of fine flour mixed with oil, or unleavened wafers anointed with oil. But if your offering is a grain offering baked in a pan, it shall be of fine flour, unleavened, mixed with oil. You shall break it in pieces and pour oil on it; it is a grain offering
-

-
Fine Flour.
Now we come to the meal or grain offering, "Minchah," in Hebrew, which means "Gift."
It is the only one that does not involve an animal sacrifice.
-
It was to be made of "fine flour."  In order to make coarse grain into fine flour, you have to grind and grind and grind and grind it until it is of the finest, smoothest texture; no lumps.  Then it was beaten and pounded into the desired shape and baked in the oven.  If it was an unleavened "cake," it must be "mixed with oil.  If it was an unleavened wafer, it must be "anointed" with oil.
-
Leaven depicts sin.  This offering contained no leaven because it represented Jesus His perfect life.  He was born without sin (leaven), neither did He commit any sin nor did He "know" sin.  In other words, His thoughts were completely without sin.
- The cakes were "mixed with oil," but the wafers were "anointed with oil."  Jesus was born without sin (mixed with oil: the Holy Spirit) and was "anointed with oil" upon coming up out of the waters after being baptized by John:  The Holy Spirit rested ON HIM without measure.
-
If the offering was a grain offering baked in a pan, it had to be fine flour, unleavened, mixed with oil.  They were to "break it in pieces and pour oil on it."  This is a picture of Jesus Who's body was "broken for us."
-
Perfect Balance.
Such beautiful descriptions of Jesus, aren't they?  His character is perfectly smooth, nothing uneven or coarse, and not puffed up, as with "leaven."  Like the flour with no lumps, He is perfectly balanced:  Gentle but not soft; Kind but not a pushover; Firm but not overbearing.  Every which way you turn Him, His character is perfectly balanced!
Born without sin, the Holy Spirit could reside IN HIM and be poured out ON HIM without measure after His baptism.
-

-
Oil And Frankincense.
Oil was added to the flour per God's instructions.  As you saw, Oil speaks of the Holy Spirit.  In and of itself, it speaks volumes in the way it was made.
The olives used in making oil were pressed 3 times.  Each pressing yielding oil for different purposes.  Since this is a whole amazing subject in and of itself, rather than discuss it here, you may follow the link below for more on that topic:
-
Frankincense depicts Jesus in His role as Great High Priest, representing us to God.  The way frankincense is made describes more of what Jesus went through to redeem us.  (You may need some tissues.)
-
How Frankincense Is Made.
It is tapped from it's scraggy but hardy tree by slashing the bark, which is called "striping," and allowing the exuded resin to "bleed out" and harden. These hardened resins are called "tears."
There are several species and varieties of frankincense trees.  Each produces a slightly different type of resin. Differences in soil and climate create even more diversity of the resin, even within the same species.
Boswellia sacra trees are considered unusual for their ability to grow in environments so unforgiving that they sometimes grow out of solid rock. The initial means of attachment to the rock is unknown, but is accomplished by a bulbous disk-like swelling of the trunk. This growth prevents it from being ripped from the rock during violent storms.
-

Sound like anyOne we know?  Yep, Jesus!  What terrible torture He suffered:  Slashings, stripes, beatings at the hands of man before He suffered the most ignominious death.
- These trees can actually grow out of solid rock!  That's how firmly routed and resolute our Jesus was in His determination to save all of us.  He was rock solid.
-

-
Jesus' Perfect Life.
Now you know why this offering has no animal sacrifice  involved.  It depicts Jesus' perfect, sinless LIFE.  While it's wonderful that Jesus lived a perfect life, if that's all He did.....and I say that very reverently.....you and I would still go to hell.  We can't come to God just because He lived a perfect life.
But that isn't all He did.  He offered Himself in our place and redeemed us back by His blood.  It was that perfect life which qualified Him to die that death on our behalf.
-
Odd that God speaks of Jesus' death first and then His perfect life.  He puts it first in the order of His book because, unless we understand and appreciate His death, we cannot fully appreciate His life.  His perfect life does not avail for us without that death.  But now, because of both, we can have sweet fellowship with our Abba!

-
Jesus, The Bread Of Life.
Jesus called Himself "The Bread of Life."  When bread is made, normally, leaven is added so that it will rise.  After the dough is allowed to rise, it is then punched down, kneaded and shaped into a loaf, then put into the oven to bake.  Then it becomes bread for us to eat.

When Jesus died on the cross, our sins, our "leaven," in Biblical typology, were placed on Him,Mike a garment.  He was then beaten, punched and subjected to the fires of God's judgment in payment for them all.  That is how He became the Bread of Life to us.
-
What a description, not only of His life, but also of what He suffered on our behalf!
-

Please proceed to part 7.  We will be discussing the Peace Offering.
